Tribute to Liliana Skorel “Dzidka”

Saturday, November 27, was a very important day for us, we had the privilege of organizing and participating in the tribute to the ex-combatant of the Warsaw Uprising, Liliana Skorel “Dzidka” 1927-2012 “, in the City of Borja in whose cemetery she is buried.Liliana joined the Scouts in September 1942, when she was just 14 years old, and took her oath as a member of the Armia Krajowa in March 1943. During the Warsaw Uprising, she served as a liaison in the 6th Company “Wawer” of the Battalion. ” Kilinski “, in the Srodmiescie area. She participated, with her unit in the capture of the strategic PASTA Building (Polish Telecommunications Company) one of the most emblematic victories of the insurgents.On September 13, she was seriously injured in the legs when the basement in which she was taking refuge collapsed from a Luftwaffe bombardment and she was buried alive.After the war, she emigrated to the United States in June 1946 and completed her university studies working as a waitress. In 1953 she met the one who would become her husband, the eminent Spanish scientist, D. Carlos Sánchez del Rio.

Borja City Council: Mr. Jorge Jiménez Ferrández Chief councilor of the municipal opposition group, Juan María de Ojeda Castellot, President of the Centro de Estudios Borjanos, Mr. Manuel Gracia Rivas (Retired Colonel) and Professor D. Gregorz Bak Professor at the UCM, Academic Secretary of the Department of German Philology and Slavic Philology, Coordinator of Slavic Philology.Also in attendance was the eldest daughter of Liliana Skorel, Mrs. Cristina Sanchez del Rio Skorel, who attended, accompanied by her husband, to all the acts with great emotion and gratitude.The Polish priest D. Mariusz Pielużek traveled from Pamplona to pray a response.The events consisted of the discovery of a commemorative plaque in the Borja cemetery, later those present went to the Borja Town Hall where the Mayor offered a reception and those present signed in the City’s Golden Book, after this, in At the Aguilar House, headquarters of the Borjano Studies Center, a symposium was held in which Messrs. Grzegorz Bak, Ernest Kowalczyk, and Alberto Trujillo discussed the Warsaw Uprising, Liliana’s actions during it, and her life after the war. Finally, the exhibition that we have prepared at the Casa de Aguilar was inaugurated, with the collaboration of the Polish Institute of Culture and the Institut Pamiecy Narodowy (IPN) on the Warsaw Uprising and Liliana Skorel.

El sábado 27 de Noviembre, fue un día muy importante para nosotros, tuvimos el privilegio de organizar y participar en el homenaje, en la Ciudad de Borja en cuyo cementerio está enterrada, a la excombatiente del Levantamiento de Varsovia, Liliana Skorel “Dzidka”, 1927-2012.Liliana se unió a los Scouts en septiembre de 1942, cuando apenas contaba con 14 años y realizó su juramento como miembro del Armia Krajowa en marzo de 1943. Durante en el Levantamiento de Varsovia sirvió como enlace en la 6ª Compañía “Wawer” del Batallón “Kilinski”, en la zona de Srodmiescie.Participó, con su unidad en la toma del estratégico Edificio PASTA (Compañía polaca de telecomunicaciones) una de las victorias más emblemáticas de los insurgentes.El 13 de septiembre fue gravemente herida en las piernas al quedar enterrada viva cuando se derrumbó el sótano en el que se refugiaba de un bombardeo de la Luftwaffe. Tras la guerra emigro a Estados Unidos en junio de 1946, completó sus estudios universitarios trabajando como camarera y en 1953 conoció al que seria su esposo, el eminente científico español, D. Carlos Sánchez del Rio.A los actos de homenaje asistió una amplia representación tanto polaca como de la Ciudad de Borja:

Profesor Titular de la UCM , Secretario Académico del Departamento de Filología Alemana y Filología Eslava, Coordinador de Filología Eslava.También estuvo presente la hija mayor de Liliana Skorel, Dª Cristina Sanchez del Rio Skorel, que asistió acompañada de su esposo a todos los actos con gran emoción y agradecimiento,El sacerdote polaco D. Mariusz Pielużek se desplazó desde Pamplona para rezar un responso.Los actos consistieron en el descubrimiento de una placa conmemorativa en el cementerio de Borja, posteriormente los presentes se desplazaron al Ayuntamiento de Borja donde el Sr. Alcalde
ofreció una recepción y los presentes firmaron en el Libro de Oro de la Ciudad, tras esto, en la Casa de Aguilar, sede del Centro de Estudios Borjano se realizó un simposio en el que los Sres. Grzegorz Bak, Ernest Kowalczyk, y Alberto Trujillo dialogaron sobre el Levantamiento de Varsovia, las acciones de Liliana durante el mismo y su vida tras la guerra. Finalmente se inauguró la exposición que hemos preparado en la Casa de Aguilar, con la colaboración del Instituto Polaco de Cultura y el Institut Pamiecy Narodowy (IPN) sobre el levantamiento de Varsovia y Liliana Skorel. Los actos fueron muy emotivos y a los mismos asistieron numerosos vecinos de Borja, sorprendidos al descubrir el heroísmo de una persona a la que habían conocido durante años y de la que nunca habían sabido que había participado en una batalla tan terrible como fue el Levantamiento de Varsovia.Como muy bien dijo al abrir el simposio en la Casa de Aguilar el presidente del centro de Estudios Borjanos, D.Manuel Gracia Rivas, los héroes son aquellos que lo dan todo sin pedir nada a cambio, y Liliana lo dio todo sin presumir jamás de ello.Cześć jej pamięci!Las imágenes son cortesía de Tomasz Slowinski.
